Front View [13K]

  • Early 1950's
  • LW, MW and SW wavebands
  • 6 Valves (AZ31 rectifier, ECH35, two EF39's,
    EBL31 plus EM34 tuning indicator).
  • AC Mains
  • Original cost unknown
NOTES Unlike the earlier Philips 785AX, this is more conventional. The set still retains the characteristic Philips tuning dial on the top of the set, but this time it is in a fixed position.

Appart from the tuning dial, the set is remarkably similar in appearence to the Philips 186A of 1946 as illustrated in the book "Radio! Radio!", page 175.

Whilst this may look like an early set, the tuning dial reveals that the set is post "Copenhagen Plan" which makes it post March 1950. A quick guide is to check the location of the Light Program ; a shade below 250m is post 1950, above 250m (261m actually) is pre-1950.
SERVICE DATA Thanks to Leon for pointing out that the set uses the same chassis as the much earlier 1946 Philips 170A for which I have an electronic opy of the "Trader" service sheet 770.
CURRENT STATE A few scratches but basically clean.
WHERE FOUND Bought from a second hand shop for £35
